Welcome to NCRisk!
NCRisk Version 1.70 is "User Support" Computer Software for 100% IBM
Compatible MicroComputers. NCRisk is a Continental Game similar to Parker
Brothers' board game - Risk*.
--- Important Notices ---
NCRisk Version 1.70 is Copyrighted User Support software. This means that you
may try this software out before you pay for a user license to continue using
the software. If after trying this software out, you decide to keep it or
continue to use it, you are directed to register your copy with the author at
the given address for a single site user license - thus the term "User
Support". Further improvements to this software are directly dependent on the
support given by its users.
NCRisk Version 1.70 may be freely distributed and shared with others, but
only in its complete, original form! No one may modify NCRisk or its
accompanying materials, for any reason, in any way, including but not limited
to dis-assembling.
--- Disclaimer ---
NCRisk Version 1.70 - and all previous and future versions - with its
accompanying materials and documentation is a proprietary product and is
protected by copyright laws! Upon registering your copy, it is licensed - not
sold - for use by the registrant! The software is provided 'AS IS' without
warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied! IN NO EVENT WILL THE AUTHOR
OR ANYONE ELSE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST SAVINGS, LOST
PROFITS, OR ANY OTHER INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE

No fee, charge, contribution or remuneration may be collected on behalf of
NCRisk by anyone other than the author stated in this document.
If you wish to obtain a new disk with the latest complete version of NCRisk,
include $5.00 extra to cover the cost of the disk and shipping charges.
This way the software will contain within itself, the Name of the Registrant
and the Registration Number of the registered copy. Another reason to
consider getting a new copy of NCRisk directly from the author is that you
will then know the original source of your software copy. There has been an
increasing amount of cases of software "viruses" in the public and Bulletin
Board System computing arenas. Getting your copy of NCRisk directly from the
author will help fight this potentially serious problem.
Clearly specify the Name to be used as the Registrant, and which NCRisk
version you are registering. Please include information on the computer
system which this software is used on. Any comments, suggestions for future
versions, or forbid - information of bugs, are requested by the author and
will be greatly useful.
Registering your copy of NCRisk is the only method the author has to keep in
touch with the NCRisk users. Registered users will be notified of new versions
of NCRisk as they become available. Within a specified period of time upon
the notification, registered users have the option to obtain a FREE registered
copy of the new version for $5.00 to cover the cost of the disk and shipping
charges. Registered users have the added benefit that they may write for
further help, information and/or pointers concerning NCRisk.
A 'LICENSE REGISTRATION FORM' has been provided with this software package for
mail-in registration. Even if you do not register, the author encourages
comments from all of those who have been exposed to NCRisk. This will allow
for improvements to the software which will make it more enjoyable to use. So
please take a moment to fill out and mail the form regardless. It is the least
one could ask.
The main intent of registering your copy of NCRisk is not to make a profit for
the author. Any contribution will indeed be used for previous and future
investments in the software development. This includes costs of hardware and
software used to develop and maintain NCRisk.
--- Software Requirements and Related ---
NCRisk Version 1.70 requires a 100% IBM Compatible MicroComputer with CGA
(Color Graphics Adapter), EGA (Enhanced Graphics Adapter), VGA (Video
Graphics Array) or Hercules* graphics. The operating system requirement is
MS-DOS* version 2.10 or higher.
NCRisk Version 1.70 requires varying amounts of system memory depending upon
which video mode it is run in. The video modes shown below are listed in
increasing order of their system memory requirements. The lower video modes
require 256K of system memory. The higher video modes require 320K of system
memory.
NCRisk Version 1.70 runs either in CGA 320x200 4-color video mode, in Hercules
Monochrome 720x348 video mode, in EGA 640x200 16-color video mode, in VGA
640x200 16-color video mode, in EGA 640x350 16-color video mode, or in VGA
640x350 16-color video mode. NCRisk is designed for color graphics systems.
The Hercules monochrome mode is only added for those who do not have a color
graphics video display card.
NCRisk has NOT been tested in a multi-programming or a multi-tasking
environment. This includes MS-Windows* and OS/2*. Therefore it must be stated
that as of now, running NCRisk Version 1.70 in this type of environment will
have unpredictable results. If you do use this software in such environments,
the author is interested in the outcome.

--- History and Future of NCRisk ---
NCRisk Version 1.70 was developed on a Zenith Z-248 AT* compatible computer
with a Z─449 Hercules/MDA/CGA/EGA/VGA video card and a ZVM-149-P page white
monitor. The operating system used was Zenith's release of MS-DOS* version
3.21. Therefore, this is the type of system it has been tested on.
NCRisk Version 1.00 was released June 24, 1988.
NCRisk Version 1.10 was released July 27, 1988.
NCRisk Version 1.20 was released August 15, 1988.
NCRisk Version 1.30 was released January 14, 1989.
NCRisk Version 1.61 was released February 20, 1989.
The changes in NCRisk Version 1.70 are relatively minor:
- The Escape Key now exits from the "Attack" Area.
- Changes to documentation.
If sufficient interest and support is given for NCRisk, future versions may
include added game options. Possibilities are the use of territory cards, a
version in which NCRisk plays one side of the game and a mouse version.
Another possibility would be a NCRisk Users Bulletin Board System. Send in
your registration form to keep informed.
NCRisk distribution began in the Albany, New York area. Distribution was
originally from local Bulletin Board Systems in this area. NCRisk is now also
distributed by various "Shareware" library distributors. The author is
interested in how far NCRisk gets distributed.
--- The Game ---
The following Instructions assume the players are familiar with the rules from
the Risk* board game by Parker Brothers. This software game is similar to the
board game except that in NCRisk Version 1.70 there are no Cards used. Also,
when attacking territories, the loser only loses one army at a time.
--- Section 1 - How to Begin ---
NCRisk Version 1.70 is started from MS-DOS* at the prompt such as:
A>NCRISK
or
C>NCRISK
It is suggested that if you are using a hard disk, then create a separate
directory for NCRisk Version 1.70, such as "NCR_V170".
By default NCRisk Version 1.70 tries to detect the graphics display driver
present. NCRisk may be forced to use a supported display mode by using the
following parameter examples:
A>NCRISK CGA
A>NCRISK EGALO (for 640x200 EGA 16-color mode)
A>NCRISK VGALO (for 640x200 VGA 16-color mode)
A>NCRISK EGA (for 640x350 EGA 16-color mode)
A>NCRISK VGA (for 640x350 VGA 16-color mode)
A>NCRISK HERC
If you have started NCRisk successfully, you will see an opening screen
similar to the one following, otherwise you may get a critical error message.
If NCRisk is started in an invalid display mode, then it is unlikely that you
will be able to continue past the opening screen.

Once here, you may:
1) Load a previously saved game from the disk
2) Restart an active game (since this is also the ending screen)
3) Start a New Game
4) Exit the Program
If you choose "L" <Load>, then you will be prompted for the name of the
previously saved game.
If you choose "R" <Restart> and a game is active, then you will resume to
where you previously left off. If no game is presently active, then the result
will be as if you entered "S" <Start>.
If you choose "S" <Start> (or "R" <Restart> and no game is active) then you
will be prompted for how many players are to play NCRisk. Then enter a value
from 2 to 6. If the entered value is not valid, NCRisk will return to the
opening screen. If a valid value is entered, you will be prompted for the
names and patterns of the players. There is no way to change the pattern
information during the game, so enter this information correctly the first
time.
If you choose <ESC> - the Escape key, then you will exit the program.
--- Section 2 - The Setup ---
After entering the players' names and patterns, NCRisk displays the NCRisk
board and randomly distributes territories to the players. Then NCRisk places
one army from the respective owner on each territory. After of which, each
player must in turn distribute his/her remaining armies among his/her
territories until all armies have been distributed.
Once all armies are initially distributed, players are given the opportunity
to move/redistribute any of their armies to any other territory they occupy.
When all players are done moving armies, then NCRisk randomly selects a player
to begin the game.
--- Section 3 - Beginning a New Player's Turn ---
First the active player's pattern is displayed in the Status Box located
in between South America and Africa. Beneath the Status Box, the patterns of
all active players are shown in order of which their turns are taken.
At the beginning of each player's turn, his/her territories are counted up.
The player then receives one additional army for each three territories he/she
occupies.
If the player solely occupies any continent, he/she is also entitled to
additional armies respectively for the continent as follows:
North America - 5 Additional armies
South America - 2 Additional armies
Europe - 5 Additional armies
Africa - 3 Additional armies
Asia - 7 Additional armies
Australia - 2 Additional armies
The player whose turn is beginning then distributes these additional armies
amongst his/her territories. After this process is completed, the player is
placed into the "Attack" Area, which is described later.
--- Section 4 - The Active Player's Turn ---
The active player's pattern is displayed in the Status Box located in between
South America and Africa.
The player whose turn it is remains the active player until he/she ends
his/her turn as described in the "Ending a Player's Turn" section.
While it is the active player's turn, he/she may attack other territories as
described in the "Attack" Section, for as long as he/she is able and wishes to
do so.
Players may freely switch between the "Attack" Area and the "Command" Area.
--- Section 5 - Ending a Player's Turn ---
To end a player's turn, the player must first be in the "Attack" Area. At the
"Attack" Prompt enter "END". This ends the active player's turn and asks the
player if he/she wishes to move any armies.
The next player's turn will then automatically begin once the active player
has completed moving any armies.
--- Section 10 - "Command" Area ---
The following Screen, from NCRisk Version 1.70, shows the Commands selectable
from the Command Prompt:

╘═════════════════════════════════════╧╧═════════════════════════════════════╛
Most of these commands are straight forward.
NCRisk has two main areas/levels. One of these is the "Command" Area, whereas
any of these commands may be selected. The other area is the "Attack" Area.
At the beginning of each players turn, the player starts off in the "Attack"
Area. The "Command" Area is selected from the "Attack" Area by pressing
<ESC>, the Escape Key. To return to the "Attack" Area (say, to end the
player's turn) select "A" <Attack> at the Command Prompt.
--- Section 11 - "Attack" Area ---
The "Attack" Area is the area a player begins his turn in. From this point,
the player may: 1) press <ESC>, the Escape Key, to enter the "Command" Area
2) type "END" to end his/her turn
3) attack another territory
To attack another territory, the player enters the IDs of two territories. The
First ID is the territory which is doing the attacking, which must be occupied
by the player whose turn it is. The Second ID is the territory being attacked,
which must be occupied by an opponent. These two territories must be adjacent
or connected by a dotted line. In color graphic modes, the territory IDs are
found within the territory boundaries and are the same color as the owner's
pattern. The Input for an Attack consists of the first territory ID followed
by the second territory ID with NO space or carriage return <CR> between.
Therefore, the Input should consist of four alphanumeric characters and then a
carriage return <CR>. NCRisk then checks to make sure the input is valid, and
if it is, then NCRisk rolls the players' dice and updates the result of the
Attack challenge.
So for example, if territory "1A" is attacking "1B" enter "1A1B<CR>" as the
Attack Input.
If the attacking territory has 2 or more armies on it, and the defending
territory has at least 1 army on it, after the attack result, then NCRisk
prompts the attacking player as to if he/she wishes to continue and attack
again with the same territories.
Attacking other territories may continue for each player's turn until he/she
enters "END" at the Attack Prompt.
--- NCRisk Configuration ---
In the "Command" Area of NCRisk the user may toggle the quiet mode. In EGA/VGA
modes, the user may also configure various environment colors. These options
are remembered between sessions.
